The Circle Paving Goes Down

Owing to the access to the block being at the top south west of the block, all the construction needs to be done from the opposite north east, with the top access point being the last thing to be done, working up backwards from the bottom of the yard. The means the very first piece of the puzzle (since the block has been cleared) is the circular sandstone crazy paving.

Stefan starts by laying out the form-work for putting down the concrete base per below.

There's a tricky piece over against the fence that has to be dealt with. This is supposed to be set aside for a pizza oven (eventually LOL) but while they were digging out for the formwork they hit a concrete root barrier. The root barrier is supposed to protect our neighbours property from the roots of the quite substantial Monterey Cypress tree. The barrier is about 40 cms wide, and 3 or 4 meters deep running all the way up the north side of the block! I remember the neighbours requesting and me agreeing for it to be put in on our side when it was just a block of land (their builder forgot to put it in and they needed it for their occupancy certificate) but didn't think there would be consequences down the track!

The solution ended up being a two level affair, with a raised plinth (sitting on top of the concrete root barrier) for the pizza oven.

Next comes the concrete to fill it in!

It's a fair hike a barrow at a time to get the concrete from the top of the yard to the bottom! I'm sure it keeps them fit!

Down goes the concrete! Looking smooth.

It must have been a pain to transport via barrow, so I'm glad it was them and not me! :-) Next comes the assembly of the giant jigsaw puzzle that makes up the paving.

In the shot above you can see the plinth on the left against the fence which had to be raised up to accommodate the root barrier as discussed earlier, and the growing puzzle.

Here Stefan is showing the finer points of pointing. He's a bit of a stickler for the detailed work, which is awesome for me. In the background you can see the finished oven plinth

Here it is, job done and looking great! He's going to come back later and water blast it and put down some chemical treatment to protect the stonework from bird and possum poo. The centre circle is to hold a custom made mosaic to be put together by my wife. It's supposed to have the Japanese symbol for fire in blue tile.
